Nigel Benson established 20th Century Glass in 1986, having been a collector for about ten years. The business concentrates predominantly on British art glass, whether factory based or by an individual glass artist, loosely from the twentieth century (about 1870 through to 1980), whilst also encompassing Continental and Scandinavian glass.
Our reputation in dealing in British glass has grown over the last 19 years to the point where Nigel has also branched out into writing about many aspects of glass and putting on exhibitions that promote overlooked areas of glass collecting.
We are recognised specialists in Scottish glass such as Monart and Vasart, as well as Powell/Whitefriars, British Art Cut Glass, and Nazeing, although we also stock wares by many other British factories, such as Isle of Wight, Kings Lynn, Thomas Webb, Stevens & Williams (Royal Brierley), Walsh and Wedgwood, etc.
Within the post war era we usually hold a representative Scandinavian stock - currently this is predominantly Finnish - along with work designed by Geoffrey Baxter for Whitefriars, work by Ronald Stennett-Willson for various factories, and Isle of Wight glass.
Nigel strongly believes in opening up new areas of collecting and shining a light on areas that have hitherto been overlooked by the dealing and collecting fraternities. To that end we held exhibitions on both British Cut Glass 1920 - 1970 and Nazeing Glass Works in 2003 (see our website for details) and are currently planning exhibitions for the future.
